2 Hours of Beach Escapade

I haven’t been in beaches lately. The Holy Week had finished and that was one of the busiest week for beach resort owners. Aside from, of course summer that ranges from the month of March to the late May, Holy Week has been established as a vacation week for Filipinos. It is the only week of the entire calendar year where one can book a flight or go to beaches and resorts, relax and meditate for all the good things that happened in your life.

The greyish-white fine sands of La Union

The Philippines had been known to be one of the religious countries in the world. A country with a majority of Catholic faith devotees, with a percentage of non-denominational Christians and Muslims. Some provinces in the Philippines had been very serious in celebrating Holy Week. It is a sacrament that was done with repentance by the Catholic devotees. For them, it was their expression of their love and faith of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. To name a few, Pampanga had been known to adhere in a penitential discipline during that important week.

They imitate the important event in Jesus’ life from the day he was betrayed by Judas Iscariot, to the moment he was held captive by the Romans and handed him to Pilate. To flogging Jesus to death, struck him on the head with staff and spit on him, mocked him and took his clothes, let him wore a twisted crown of thorns. To forcing him of carrying the cross to Golgotha, crucifying him together with the two rebels. To his rising overcoming death in the third day taking up all the sin and shame to save the world from God’s wrath and then ascending into heaven. Manila is also keen on celebrating this religious week at Quiapo Church, not only during the feast of the Black Nazarene. And pilgrimages located in Pangasinan, Rizal and Cebu.

Devotees had been practicing this life-changing event during the Holy Week. They would go to serene and secluded places to meditate and remember the death and victory of Jesus Christ on the cross. For some, Holy Week has been a short getaway amidst the busy schedules and the tiring work of the entire year. It is the only time they can relax, unwind and refresh their spirit. Beaches and resorts had been the get-go of some of the busy workaholics to relax, free from stress and toxic environment of the metro and I was given a chance to explore one of the great beaches in the North. It was a surfing destination for the surfing enthusiasts, Urbiztondo Beach located at San Juan, La Union hours drive to the famous Pagudpud.

Beach Overview

First, let me clarify that this was all coincidental. I wasn’t actually planning of going to the Urbiztondo beach. I came to La Union for an important errand, but due to a circumstance, I need to wait for how many hours to fulfill that errand. Since I got the opportunity of going to La Union (my first time after decades) and I passed by the long beaches along my way, I decided to go to a nearby beach to consume that hell of waiting. There was only one shopping mall in San Fernando and there wasn’t any space available where I can sit and wait for the hours. So what I did was, I asked a local for a nearby beach. I was lucky enough that there was a  nearby beach, and it only takes a 15-minute drive away from the shopping mall.

Urbiztondo Beach, San Juan, La Union

From the CSI Shopping Mall, you can ask a local for a drive using a tricycle for a hefty P100 – P150 fare to the seaside. It was quite expensive for a local tourist like me. But do not worry, there is a jeepney ride to the beach, you only need to walk from the shopping mall to the intersection and wait for any jeepney that passes by. You will only have to pay P10 fare. The route was something like Diretso/Bacnotan/San Fernando, both to and fro I guess. It was kind of disappointment when I learned that it only takes P10 jeepney fare compared to the hundred pesos fare on tricycle. Take note though, I support the local tourism and the locals so just take my word lightly when I said disappointment, (hahaha). It was a long beach so you can stop anywhere from the entire stretch of the beach. The drivers are kind enough to inform you that.

Reminder for the tourists

Even before reaching the place, you could feel the cold breeze that was blown from the sea. There are many establishments and hotels along the long stretch of the beach. And there are other establishments that are currently under construction. You could feel the booming business district and the busyness of the area. One local told me that I was lucky that I went there post-Holy Week because the beach was crowded during that event. Along the beach, you could find casual dining restos everywhere you look, outdoor bars on the outskirts before stepping your feet on the greyish-like sands and surf board rentals. There were also booth of henna tattoo artist, and little souvenir shops. One thing that distracted me though was seeing the warning signages like beware of jellyfish stings and do not swim at a certain distance.

Beware of Jellyfish

I came there wearing my topsider shoes and believe me, I could feel the intense heat entering inside the sole of my shoes unto my feet. As if I could almost feel I was walking barefoot. Guys, you need to always carry with you sunblocks especially it was dry and hotter these days. I could almost drink a gallon of water just by walking on the sand alone due to the intense heat of the summer. While walking along the shoreline, there were rocky old formations of corals formed near the sea, I went there with my shoes on. I had to, because I didn’t bring with me any slippers since going there wasn’t my initial intention. It wasn’t as soft as I am expecting, because I really thought that my feet might sink into the corally ground. It was tough, maybe because it was hardened overtime.

Rocky old coral formations along the shore

The sea looks color blue, the fine sands looks greyish-white compared to the other white sand beaches or the dark-greyish sands I am accustomed to. When I saw the surfing board rentals the moment I arrived, I was expecting a decent wave of waters and surfers riding on it. But what I saw was a calm sea with neither surfers nor any outdoor activities present. I couldn’t also see any cruise ships and tanker ships from afar. And I haven’t encountered any swimmers that was stung by the jellyfish. Anyway, that was just meh! I am not a surfing dude so it wasn’t a big deal for me. In addition, it wasn’t dubbed as The Surfing Capital of the North for nothing, right? Maybe my timing wasn’t perfect, (hahaha).

That was the 2-hour escapade of my life that day. Surely, I would love to return there to really experience what the Urbiztondo Beach could offer, especially during the night. It was a short, quick tour but it was refreshing. It maybe wasn’t intentional and it wasn’t something like a meditative vacation, but I am glad that I went there. I just want to quote a famous saying that I often hear:

Unplanned vacations are better than the planned ones.

And yes, I experienced it that day.

2 A.M Thoughts: The Rain

It’s passed 2 a.m. It is raining while I am doing this. I feel like writing my 2 am thoughts at this moment. I like rain actually, but only to an extent. Some people call it as pluviophile (lover of rain; someone who finds joy and peace of mind during rainy days). However you define it, rain calms my soul and my consciousness. I don’t know if it feels bothersome for the others, but I do feel at peace. I find it relaxing, especially while sipping a cup of coffee beside my bed. Back in my younger days, you would find me reading a book, or bathing out in the rain, if I’m not sleeping. Up until now, I also don’t know the scientific explanation on why during raining or rainy days in general, our memory lane is triggered. Somehow, the rain makes a person sentimental in a way. It is one of those rare occasions where it makes us think deeply about life – our life.

Just to give you a quick little information, rain is a liquid water in the form of droplets that have condensed from atmospheric water vapor and then become heavy enough to fall under gravity. That is according to Mr. Wikipedia. Well, I can’t barely remember my stock knowledge nor what my teacher told me about the scientific definition of the rain in my Science subject.

I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.
Maya Angelou

I’ve read and heard a lot of old sayings, interpretations, and passages about the rain. Now that I think about it, let me share to you some of my thoughts about the rain.

Smarthome.com - shop now!

Literally, rain is pretty troublesome for drivers. The wet pavement makes it difficult for drivers, and accidental- prone to some areas. That is why you could see warning signages along the highways. That is why drivers are adviced to be cautious and to drive carefully especially in slippery slopes and blind curves. Anyhow, most of the tires are specifically designed for any road conditions like rain.

Back when I was in my primary and middle school, I felt bothered whenever there is rain. And what really annoys me even more is when I forgot to bring with me umbrella, rain coat and boots. Have you tried soaking wet when you arrived home? Have you tried your feet smells stinky when you remove your socks because the water went inside your shoes? Or say, you have to air dry your notes and books because it gotten wet and its pages were piled together? One wrong pull of a sheet and it will tear all the pages together. That was bothersome at that age. You have to spend hours to blot out the water using paper towels or a cloth. What makes it more troublesome is when you have a homework. Either you have to patiently air dry your notes and later do your assignment, or don’t do it at all. Hahaha

Rain falls because the clouds can no longer handle the weight. Tears fall because the heart can not longer handle the pain.

Scientifically, storm starts from rain, gust and the air pressure within the clouds. There will never be storm if there is no rain. They go hand in hand, and inseparable. Typhoons are formed and it does extreme damages. Although my country experiences regular typhoons at signal 3 or 4, still, it’s always hard to cope up from the after effect like flooding and the devastation it caused. Whenever I watches the weather news, I could frequently hear monsoons from the weather reporter, even in summer.

Metaphorically, storms represents the troubles, pains and the present sufferings in our lives. It is an event in our life, that made a tremendous effect, like a turning point that greatly affected us. During the time of Noah in the book of Genesis, Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. So, the Lord called him to make an ark. In Genesis 6:7, “The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled.” So when Noah created what God commanded him to make, God sent a heavy rain (Gen. 7:4;12) and flooded the Earth, wiping the evilness and wickedness of the human race.

See also: The Beauty in the Far Provinces

God sends rain and floods to teach us a lesson. He wants us to test our faith to him. Just like how the problems will come; just like how the rain will pour; and just like how God sent rain to Noah. There is a designated time that God will let it stop. God will take away that trouble, pain and sufferings. It is because of the storms in our lives that our faith is strengthened. It is during the storms in our lives that we can determine the people who can be trusted and relied on. It is during the storms that God will test our patience, our obedience and our faith. It is after the storms that we grow in our faith.

I have lived pain, and my life can tell: I only deepen the wound of the world when I neglect to give thanks the heavy perfume of wild roses in early July and the song of crickets on summer humid nights and the rivers that run and the stars that rise and the rain that falls and all the good things that a good God gives.
Ann Voskamp

When I was in my younger years, I could hear my teacher and my classmates saying that our mother nature is weeping that’s why it is raining. It was believable at that age. Adding the children shows that I watched back then. It warned people of their illegal environmental activities, and exploitation of the nature. That is why the mother nature fights back by means of heavy rains, floods, earthquakes and other natural calamities.

This is the most profound meaning of the rain. Literally, it is a blessing for the farmers that were hit by El Niño, La Niña and other drought-like phenomenon. It is a blessing to the trees and the nature as God showers his creations. It balances the cycle of life.

In Acts 14: 17, “Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.” Just as how God sends storms in our lives, he also sends rain to bless us and end our pain and suffering. Just as how God send rain to a barren land and transform it into a fruitful land. So, if you are maybe in the midst of your barrenness, keep on praying and wait for God to send rain.

I remember when our elementary
teacher asked us to bring plants as a project. Back then, he will share how important the rain is to a plant. In order for the plant to flourish and grow, it needs an ample amount of rain showers or water.

In Isaiah 45: 8, “You heavens above, rain down my righteousness; let the clouds shower it down. Let the earth open wide, let salvation spring up, let righteousness flourish with it; I, the Lord, have created it.” And in Isaiah 55: 10, “As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater”. God sent rain to flourish the seeds. We are the seeds. God wants to prosper us and grow in our faith.

Criticism, like rain, should be gentle enough to nourish a man’s growth without destroying his roots.
Frank A. Clark

Time checked, 5:30 a.m, I could hear the roosters crowing. By this time, the rain had subsided. The pluviophile in me had receded. It was a blessing, another blessing for a new day.

Don’t Become Who Hurt You

This is simple yet profound that when taken by heart it has a deep meaning within its context. Sometimes we don’t know that a part of us that was hurt can leave a scar that cannot easily mend by time, or even death. Sometimes, the person that hurts us leave an impression that is forever delisted in our system, if not forever be forgotten in our life.

See also: You Are Never Worthless

I remember when I was young. The person who hurt me left my childhood a sad, immeasurable pain, and left me growing with a vengeful heart. I am so drowned of avenging myself because that part of me was the beginning of a mess I paid by my entire childhood. That part of me was helpless. A voiceless kid who just followed orders and what those adults made me believed. I didn’t feel an ounce of guilt or conscience because what I was feeling back then was a total remorse and loathe. I hated him to the point that I cursed him. To the point I no longer feel any love or sympathy. To the point I wished he was dead. I blamed him for all my childhood sufferings, for the brokenness I feel, and the family I will never have. I went through it a lot physically, intellectually and emotionally. To the point that I feel like I don’t deserve this life – everything!

I did everything I could not to be like him; not to grow as an incompetent adult; not to grow as a worthless husband or a useless dad. I plunged myself away, so far away, dwindling in shame and shutting all my emotions and keep it all by myself.

It is normal for anyone to blame others. Humans are created selfish and full of pride. Humans find fault in everything; humans aren’t easily contented in what they have, and I’m no better than anyone.

Later did I realized, that the person I never wanted to be – the person I hated, and rejected, is becoming the person in me. The things I hated about him, is suddenly imparted in my system. I only realized when I found myself acting like a fool, when my actions and my indecisiveness are becoming prevalent to the extent that it is manifesting on me. I hated myself for it, just as how I hated the person who made me feel it.

I didn’t undergo any therapy or counseling. The guilt, the anger and frustrations is piling up. It’s eating me whole inside. A part of me – the helpless me, is trying to suppress it as much as it can. It was hard. There are times I feel like I will undergo cardiac arrest anytime because of the sudden burst of pain in my heart. It doesn’t always occur, but once it does, it’s unbearable and I feel like I can’t breathe. It’s never good to keep it all inside especially when you have a weak heart.

It is when we hurt that we learn.
– Steve Maraboli

DON’T BECOME WHO HURT YOU. Don’t let your hurt and pain define you; don’t let it feed your ego; don’t let the good in you be consumed by it; don’t let it become who you are – learn to forgive; forgiveness is the key. I know it isn’t easy. It isn’t something that could easily erase everything, every memory and hurt. Forgive sincerely, at least try it little by little. It’s a long process of healing, but it produces great result – a fulfilling result.

When I think about it, I realized that it’s possible. It’s possible to forgive. It’s possible to feel positive despite the negativities and despite there has been no changes in his part. So, if you were given a chance, confront that person who hurt you and made you feel it. I know it was wrong for keeping it all inside me. I know fully that it has a negative effect in my personality, in my upbringing but I was always like that – stubborn. I suffered from it. And I don’t want you to feel it, that same feeling. It was never good. It robbed me my happiness in my childhood. It robbed me the love I should have given. It robbed me of the future I should have had, if only I didn’t allowed that hurt to ate my whole being.

1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Lastly, have faith. Give all your hurt and pains to our father in heaven.

Burying the time capsule in the ground breaking ceremony of The LGU Ville

Bayambang – A momentous activity last March 25, 2019, happened in the municipality of Bayambang. The signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the distribution of Notice Approval for the Villa Magsaysay Housing Project, the awarding of Certificate of Occupancy for the Ancop Village beneficiaries, and the groundbreaking of LGU Bayambang employee’s housing project was held at Bical Sur, Bayambang.

Groundbreaking ceremony of The LGU Ville

PAG-IBIG Fund Officers Homelending Operations-Luzon Group  Vice President Atty. Joseph Quiboloy, Business Development Sector Senior Vice President Fermin Sta Teresa Jr, Business Development Department- North Luzon Department Manager III Josephine Reyes and Bayambang’s government officials, Mayor Cezar Quiambao and Municipal Administrator Atty. Raymundo Bautista together with Vice Mayor Raul Sabangan, the municipal councilors and LGUs marked the important event. In partnership with PAGIBIG FUND and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Bayambang, “The LGU Ville” was established.

Earlier, the LGU of Bayambang had commenced an awarding event prior to the groundbreaking ceremony. They awarded a certificate and a donation worth one hundred thousand pesos (P100,000) to the Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgender, Queers, and Intersex (LGBTQI) Association of Bayambang for their sustainable livelihood program. Certificate of Completion for the Basic Computer Literacy Training to the senior citizens for the 60th Public Library Day, a certificate for the awarding of SINGKAPITAL 2019 to Bayambang National High School performers, and the awarding for the Most Oustanding Athletes of the Taekwondo team that participated in the national competitions.

Every employee dreamt of owning a house. That is why the local government of Bayambang established a “pabahay” project that prioritizes the housing need and welfare of its government employees. After the inauguration of the “ANCOP Village”, the government didn’t stop there. It was just the start of the government’s commitment to helping the homeless Bayambangueños and improving their lives. A commitment that is part of the 10-year BPRP Anti – Poverty project of Mayor Quiambao’s administration. This time with the participation of PAG-IBIG, it aims to address the basic housing need of its constituents.

Fermin in his speech was grateful to the mayor for the trust in the project partnership. At the same time, he shared that Mayor Quiambao and PAG-IBIG shared the same vision and mission in providing decent homes for every Filipino family, and this will also serve as their support for the shelter program of the national government. “On top of that, we are also giving chances for the employees earning below twelve thousand pesos (P12,000) where PAG-IBIG Fund subsidizes the interests rates and each member will only pay a minimum of three (3) percent interest rate for the first five (5) years. This program is to make sure that our lower-income earners like security guards, salesladies, household helpers, and other associations including drivers, the association of the drivers, and other community organizations will also be given a chance to avail the housing for their families,” Fermin added.

Mayor Quiambao arriving at the event.

Mayor Quiambao and the municipality hoping to sustain the budget, this project was decided to be included under the local government’s Special Economic Enterprise because the government needs additional revenues by 2020 – 2021. “This will replace our expected income from the disposal of the assets in PAG-IBIG so that we will not go below the half-billion mark of the budget of Bayambang,” he quoted. “I hope that this will be successful being the first LGU project as a developer.”

After signing the Memorandum of Understanding. [L-R] Atty. Raymundo Bautista, Vice Mayor Raul Sabangan, Mayor Cezar Quiambao, PAG-IBIG Fund Mr Fermin Sta Teresa, Atty. Joseph Quiboloy, Ms. Josephine Reyes and Coun. Amory Junio

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding for the project and signatories of the officials and a photo opportunity together with the councilors, followed by the “time capsule” groundbreaking ceremony and the awarding of certificate of occupancy for the CFC-ANCOP Housing Project beneficiaries was made official to the public. Meanwhile, the awarding of the Notice of Approval for the Villa Magsaysay beneficiaries, and the draw lots of the designated houses to be given away for the Ancop Village took place later that afternoon.

Awarding of Certificate of Occupancy to one of the Ancop beneficiaries, Erlinda Valdez with Mayor Cezar Quiambao, Ms. Lerma Padagas, and Municipal councilors.

San Carlos City/Mangatarem – Vice President (VP) Leni Robredo visited the cities of San Carlos, Mangatarem and Lingayen in Pangasinan last March 21, 2019 to voluntarily endorse the eight (8) official candidates of Otso Diretso senatoriables under Liberal Party (LP).

Otso Diretso (Straight Eight), is a line-up of senatorial candidates composed of LP candidates. A multi-party electoral alliance that is known to be critical to the current administration. This alliance is composed of re-election senator, Sen. Bam Aquino, Mar Roxas, Atty. Pilo Hilbay, Atty. Chel Diokno, Atty. Romy Macalintal, Rep. Gary Alejano, Erin Tañada and the only female among the gentlemen, Samira Gutoc.

VP Robredo has been vocal of her support to the Otso Diretso candidates even before the campaign period for the national candidates started. We watched her and heard her in the news promoting the accomplishments of these candidates and why they should be elected. During her visit, she cannot help but give praises to these amazing people and how she managed to convince them despite some issues that have been brewing against the Administration’s Hugpong- their party counterpart and co-candidates for the senatorial bid.

In her visits, she was all-praises to Tañada, son and grandson of the late congressmen Tañadas is known to have a great reputation in politics. Erin Tañada who accomplished his three (3) terms in the Congress, became a deputy speaker and majority floor leader, he remained simple despite his success and no corruption record. Robredo also narrated that she worked with Gary Alejano in the 16th Congress, during the time when she was a Congresswoman. She remembered Alejano as one of the members of Magdalo. But when she met him at the Congress, she witnessed his kindness and generosity. Alejano is one of the members of the Philippine marines that fought with rebels in Mindanao, later on, sentenced to seven (7) years in prison because of exposing the corruption in the administration of the former president, Gloria Arroyo. After which, he dedicated his life to public service when he got his freedom.

Mar Roxas was Robredo’s partner in the last 2016 election that ran for the presidential bid. Robredo narrated how Roxas turned her down, but because of his dedication to serving the public, Robredo convinced him to run again. Bam Aquino was Robredo’s campaign manager last 2016 election. The moment Robredo met the real Bam Aquino aside from his family name, she was amazed at his outstanding performances at a young age. Known for his “Free College Education Bill”, Filipino college students can now avail themselves of the free tuition fee in state universities.

Some of the candidates of Otso Diretso are neophytes in politics. Four (4) of them are new candidates. Robredo tried convincing them because she knew that despite no political backgrounds, these 4 candidates have been helping the Filipinos in their own way. Romy Macalintal, a famous election lawyer. Unknown to many, his advocacy is helping senior citizens. He toppled big establishments and filed charges against them for not following the Seniors Citizen Law. Pilo Hilbay came from a poor family. He finished his studies because of scholarships. Despite his record as a bar topnotcher, he worked in the government amidst the offers of big law firms in the Philippines. He worked as a Solicitor General and currently teaching at the University of the Philippines (UP). Hilbay is known for defending our case in the Netherlands against China in the West Philippine Sea dispute. Chel Diokno, the son of Pepe Diokno- an outstanding lawyer, former DOJ secretary, and a former senator. Robredo narrated how she idolizes Chel Diokno even before her husband was a mayor. Diokno was the lawyer of all the poor Filipinos in her province. He helped in the cases of Tokhang victims, the victims of the submergence of a passenger ship where a high death toll was reported, and the farmers that were not equally distributed with land titles.

The last of the list is Samira Gutoc, the only woman in Otso Diretso. Unknown to many, Gutoc was appointed in the Bangsamoro Commission. Robredo narrated how Gutoc resigned from her post when she no longer believed in the administration. Despite her resignation, she continued her advocacy for her fellow Muslims, for the bakwit, and for Filipinos who lost their homes in Marawi.

“Pinapakilala ko rin ang kandidato namin pero ayoko sabihin na botohan nyo sila dahil sila ‘yung kandidato ko. ‘Yung ginawa ko lang pinakilala ko, pero ang pakiusap ko parang napaka-cliche na ‘yung Vote Wisely. Pero parang utang na loob, ‘wag natin sayangin iyong pagkakataon na ‘to. ‘Yun lang ‘yung pakiusap ko. (I am also introducing my candidates, but I don’t mean that you vote for them just because they are my candidates. What I am trying to accomplish is to introduce them, but I am humbly asking, although Vote Wisely seemed so cliched. But just like out of gratitude, don’t lose this oppprtunity. That’s all I’m asking),” Robredo told the students and faculties of Virgen Milagrosa University (VMU).

The Beauty in the Far Province

I have never been in many places in the Philippines. I only saw limited places across the region. But, I must say that even in these limited places, as long as you have an optimistic perception of everything, you could see beauty in it. There is always beauty in everything, if you will learn to appreciate even the smallest detail.

Beauty of far provinces

I consider myself as a traveler, regardless if I can count on my fingers the countries and the provinces I traveled. Being a traveler, doesn’t define if you had conquered the world. Although I admit that every traveler dreamt of traveling the world, I for one, is just enjoying the perks of my work. I get to see places new to me. I get to enjoy the panoramic scenes laid before my eyes that not everyone have the opportunity to do so.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. – Lao Tzu

Nature is really a beauty on its own. God had crafted in his hands many wonders, creatures and natural occurences that no human can create. God crafted mountains and volcanoes; he crafted the briliance of the blue sea; or the fluffy white clouds. He crafted the pleasantness of the lush greeneries. The falling of the water in falls and streams. All of these are wonders one cannot fathom.

Being one with nature, you get to feel that somehow you are in a different dimension. Nature enthusiast, dendrophilia, and nemophilist are all synonymous to the love of nature, trees and forest. Although, not everyone has that fondness in nature, but being a traveler, it is an innate feeling inside you.

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes. – Marcel Proust

One of the benefit of a traveler, is to enjoy the gift of God- the nature. So, even when you are in the deep woods, in the middle of the ocean, beneath the altitude, at the top of the mountain, diving in the vast sea, in your hometown, in the far rural areas or countrysides or even in a small garden, you just have to enjoy the view and be thankful of life because you get to see all of these things. If you can’t yet afford traveling to Maldives, in Machu Picchu, in the forest of Congo and Amazon, in Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, in the African Safari, in the Himalayan Alps, depths of Grand Canyon, in the night sky of Norway and the Blue Lagoon of Iceland, make it your priority in your bucketlist and spare a portion of your money for it.

With this year’s theme, “Bayang Pinagtibay ng Pagkakaisa at Pananampalataya laban sa Kahirapan” and the mayor’s BPRP 10-year action plan against poverty, Bayambang has grown into a highly- progressive and well-developed municipality within the past years. Much to be thankful for the successes and accomplishments of the town is the guidance of their guardian saint, Bayambang’s patron saint, St. Vincent Ferrer where Bayambang will celebrate the 400th founding anniversary of St. Vincent Ferrer Parish Church and the patron saint’s 600th  death anniversary. The Jubilee celebration will take place this coming April 2019, and the municipality of Bayambang will set to attempt a Guinness World Record of “The tallest bamboo supported structure” in the world.

Measuring with a physical height of fifty-one meters (51m); 3,470 total number of polygons; 222 segments and cuts; 4, 124.26 sqm surface area; 767 rings; 60 tons total weight of bamboo panels made of medium carbonized bamboo cladding and steel; with a volume of 768.99 cu. m; 22,626 total numbers of bamboo panels used and 60.10 meters from the foundation level. It was said to be “Higher than the Statue of Liberty in New York City”, and will rise as a part of the sixty-seven (67) hectares soon-to-be-developed new town at Brgy. Bani, Bayambang. The tallest image of St. Vincent Ferrer will be unveiled on the night of April 5, 2019, but a grand thanksgiving and fiesta mass, and a grand procession will take place prior to the inauguration of the statue.

“We are creating a landmark for people to remember and for Bayambang to be recognized all over the world,” announced Mayor Quiambao during the groundbreaking of the statue last year. Bayambang has conquered the world and placed the municipality on the map, as it broke the Guinness World Record title for the Longest Barbecue at eight (8) kilometers overthrowing the previous record set by Turkey.

Meanwhile, at 3 p.m on March 27, 2019, the first day of the nine-day novena, a Holy Door at St. Vincent Ferrer Parish Church that was granted by the Vatican in Rome will be ceremoniously opened by Most Rev. Soc Villegas. It is for pilgrims who will pass through the door, that they may gain the indulgence attached with the Jubilee celebration.

“In my six (6) decades of existence, my whole life has been spent around Bayambang. I am a living witness of how man-made and natural tragedies tried to ruin our living. I have experienced extreme floods brought about by devastating typhoons. Earthquakes also shook our house and we even came to a point of losing all our properties. But every time, I and my family prayed to our Almighty through the intercession of St. Vincent, I feel that we get enlightened of what these catastrophes are meant for. A faithless person would readily lose faith and would surrender, but constant prayer and devotion make one’s faith stronger for him to understand that all of these challenges are wake-up calls for stronger faith. With this, we understand that no matter what rains or quakes come, our faith and devotion are our great refuge against whatever challenges come along the way. And we thank our patron saint for this divine intercession and guidance,” testified by Imelda Cayabyab, a devotee of St. Vincent Ferrer.

Valentine Workshop: Ninety-nine Encounters

By Chesz Dylan

“Coming through! Excuse me!”

I heard a voice of a guy from behind me. He seems in a rush and looks like almost catching his breath, so I moved an inch at the corner and let him passed by me.

“Thanks Eresh! See you later after school.” I heard him saying. I furrowed my brows, trying to remember if I knew him. Somehow, this situation and this feeling seems familiar.

“What am I thinking? He seems familiar, but where could I possibly met him?” My mind wanders thinking about that guy for the entire day. I looked at the wall clock. It was past 3 pm, and our class will be over in a minute. I asked my friend Jessica about the encounter, but even her couldn’t grasp what is in my mind.

“Seriously Eresh, you might be imagining things. Are you sure you know David?” Jessica is acting paranoid than me. “That guy just transferred in our school last semester. How could you feel so intimate towards him in just a short period?”

“I know, right? That’s why I’m telling you this because I’m seriously dead thinking about it the entire day,” tapping my forehead in confusion. “And you’re not helping me either, okey? I think I need to meet him to stop my delusions. God, I hate this!”

After our class, I waited for him at the alley beside the school. I saw him unbuttoned his white polo shirt, and rubbed it on his temples. David smiled, noticing me from a distance.

“Sorry honey, did I make you wait?” he held my right hand, and locked it with his.

I cringed, and immediately distanced myself.

“Honestly, I don’t remember that you and I are in a relationship?” pointing my index finger at him. “How? Since when?”

What he did next was unexpected. He grabbed my hand, pulled me next to him and kissed me. At first it was gentle, and it became intimate. My mind was triggered. Fragments of my memory remembers him, dated from unknown.

“A-ahh!” I shouted in pain. I feel like my head is tearing apart. I found myself crying on my knees. A nostalgic torture.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that.” David hugged me tight, crying with me. “I don’t know what else to do.”

As soon I was relieved, he assisted me to stand. I saw a number zero deeply engraved on his wrist.

“That mark!”

He tried to explain. I couldn’t grasped everything. It was shocking that tears keep on falling from my eyes. Too impossible for me to believe him.

“I died 99 times, and rewrote 99 attempts. It became possible because of this mark you gave. Maybe you had forgotten it, I’m sorry!” he apologized. “Believe me, I tried everything to be with you. Now that it has gone to zero, this is the most painful goodbye for us. But, I want you to remember that I loved you so much, my angel of death, Ereshkigal.”
