Happy Quarantine Mother’s Day 2020: What Better Gifts to Give for Moms 2021

Happy Quarantine Mothers Day 2020

It was late in December 2019 when the dreaded covid-19 virus or coronavirus took the world into its pandemic dominion. The world is severely crippled and every sector has its shares of depreciation, fluctuations, and bankruptcy. Coronavirus may not have stopped all businesses from ceasing, but it put a major damper to all major facilities, to the people, and to the world’s economy.

Even all crowded places have become deserted. People are forced to either stay at home or work at home. Social distancing and other preventive measures that were once a choice became mandatory and failure to do so could land a person in jail. We are now experiencing a different norm, and it is even said that it will be the new norm after this. Mommy duties have become more chaotic and tedious since all the family members are at home.

Since the covid outbreak, many private occasions, public gatherings, and national holidays have been suspended and canceled which are likely to be move until next year or never at all. This dilemma has caused a lot of health fear which outweighs greater than celebrating birthdays, or national holidays such as Mother’s Day.

However, just because we are in the middle of this health crisis doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the Mother’s Day occasion like usual. Since all department stores are closed, it’s likely that you wouldn’t have a present for your mom. It’s understandable, however, there are alternatives that can be done and given. Luckily, delivery service has been handy for most of us who stay at our homes. Frontliners like them have been helpful, and they are highly appreciated these days including our nurses, doctors, soldiers, and other local government units.

Gifts For The Moms This Mother’s Day

There are realizations that have been meaningful in this covid crisis. Going back to the basics and the essence of being alive is already a gift from the almighty. What more if your mom is safe and healthy during these trials. But putting it into a list, these are simple alternative gifts you could give to your mom this Quarantine Mother’s Day.

A Packed Food from A Delivery/Drive-Thru Service.

I know this may sound boring or for some, it might have been a regular day, but this applies to those families who are on a tight budget or cannot go out to spend the occasion at a diner or fancy restaurant. We all know that if there is the busiest person during this crisis aside from the frontliners, it would be our moms or your wives. And giving them the food they are craving is beyond deserving. It doesn’t hurt to cut a little budget for this occasion, what matters is that you treasure her importance in these times.

Cook an Edible Arrangements.

This might be an advantage for the cooks and chefs at heart. With a lot of cooking videos, and tutorials circulating on social media during this covid pandemic, cooking or baking edible arrangements with the use of chocolates and other creative ingredients are not just a nice gift for the moms and wives. It also relieves you from stress and anxieties brought by staying at home and being unable to do anything if you are not an introvert type.

A Flower from Your Garden.

Wouldn’t it be nice seeing your plants bloom? But wouldn’t it be nicer, if you give these flowers to the most important woman in your life? The first flower in your garden would be great, however, if you don’t have a garden, you could stroll down in your village and search for any decent-looking flowers. Giving it to your mom or wife when she wakes up, in addition to a hot coffee and a little note of greeting is bliss for them.

A Greeting Note from Your Children.

Teaching our children in celebrating Mother’s Day with a greeting card is so classic but memorable. Tell your children to write a note for their mom the day before Mother’s Day. This way, you don’t only teach your children to be empathetic, but you are teaching them (especially your sons) the importance of a woman and how they should be treated and respected. You are setting an example for your children.

However, with the use of technology, there have been meaningful alternative ways. Personalization like E-card has become more creative. Tell your children to text their moms or create a simple artwork from your mobile app and send it on Mother’s Day. Create a TikTok greeting, a Snapchat video, a slideshow, or an IG/Facebook post and tagged them in. Add it with a personal message, and it will be all worth it.

Arrange a Netflix Date.

With the scarcity of resources due to the covid pandemic, a Netflix date is more convenient than a dinner date. Don’t get me wrong, dinner date has always been one of the most worth noting ways in occasions such as Mother’s Day.

However, this year is incomparable to the previous years, we are facing an invisible enemy. We are stuck in our homes. We can’t just easily buy anything even luxuries regardless if we have all the money in the bank. Set up your room or set up the porch with your flat-screen television. You should have known beforehand the movies that your mom or wife enjoyed watching. If you don’t like the movie, at least sit beside them or her to know that you are sincere in giving them or her the best Netflix quarantine Mother’s Day celebration coupled with her favorite snacks, and drinks.

Be The Mommy for The Day.

This has always been the most effective way of appreciating your mom or wife during Mother’s Day. Let them or her take a day off. Do all the chores and lets the mommy sit on the couch all day, sleep, or rest. With how many days she has been busy taking care of you and your children during this covid crisis, this is her special day. This is advisable for those dads or husbands that don’t usually help in the household chores. Be the momma for the day!

Alone Time Together.

I get that this might be debatable for some, or don’t like the idea since the couple has been together ever since the covid. However, family time is different a couple time. You could just celebrate Mother’s Day with your children but it would be greater if you have included your alone time together. Believe it or not, there are couples who have been divorced or got separated because they don’t have time for each other. During this covid-19 crisis, spend all the time possible together especially if you are a workaholic husband, or father. This is the time you could rekindle or explore each other’s passionate desires. This is the only time you could make it all up for your wife. But, please avoid filming it regardless of whatever purpose.

Putting the sensual way aside, there are things that you could do for that alone time together. Give her a full-body massage, read a book together, engage in a meaningful conversation together, have great laughs about your previous Mother’s Day memories together, do your devotions together or sit with each other especially when you haven’t done this because of your busy schedule.

Happy Quarantine Mother's Day 2020: What Better Gifts to Give to Moms

It’s always nice to go back to the basics. This covid 19 crisis took all of us to the whirlwind mayhem that allowed us to realize some things or meditate our lives. It may not be the usual and fancy Mother’s Day celebration, but it gives us a more emotional approach, hopeful, healthy and family get together that are memorable and priceless. Realizations that occasions like this are worth more than luxurious gifts, worth more than the countries we visited together, and more than fancy restaurants we dined together. This quarantine Mother’s Day celebration is not your usual Mother’s Day celebration, and it will change that norm from Today, onward.

At the end of the day, appreciate your moms and wives, and all the everyday sacrifices they do. Happy Quarantine Mother’s Day 2020 to all!

5 Perfect Gifts To Give This Valentines And The Importance Of The Occasion

lycklig Alla hjärtans dag, Hyvää ystävänpäivää, Alles Gute zum Valentins Tag, Valentines dydd yn hapus, Kekasih hari gembira, Joyeux Saint-Valentin, Masayang Araw ng mga Puso or Feliz Dia De San Valentin. These are words with the same meaning, but spoken in different languages — Happy Valentine’s Day!

A tradition that is mostly celebrated every 14th of February, Valentine’s Day is as special as an anniversary for married couples or in a relationship. Lovers tend to be aggressive and overly romantic during this day. It’s likely that you would bump into many couples along your way and if you are single, you’ll be dying in envy. For many, this is the only day where they can explicitly express their love to their crush or partner. In some countries, you won’t be surprised if hotels and restaurants are fully booked. That is, you know what comes next after the date, right? However, there are also couples who aren’t as enthusiastic and aggressive. There are anti-social couples out there who don’t bombard their newsfeed with their romantic getaways and cheesy Valentine ideas.

How Countries Differs in Valentine Celebration

JAPAN

Tokyo

Japan has one of the most peculiar Valentine celebrations. It may be known to some, but in case you haven’t known, every Valentine’s Day, it’s the woman that gives chocolates or sweets to the guy. Sounds interesting? Well, while most of the countries’ traditions portrayed men as the shining armor, the gentlemen and romantic that give gifts to women, Japan, however, gave chances to women to show their creativity and artistry in chocolate making and wrapping by showing their affection to their guy crush, guys they admired or boyfriends (Honmei-choco). However, if you are the type of Japanese woman who doesn’t know how to bake, the only thing you can do is buy ready-made chocolates at the candy shops which you can give to your male office mates or guy friends (Giri-choco).

PHILIPPINES

The Philippines

While most Filipinos tend to celebrate Valentine’s Day similar to Americans — with all the flowers, chocolates, eating at the restaurants, and booking for hotel suites, one thing that stands out in Philippine Valentine tradition is the Valentine event of the year. It may be a party like the sponsored event Loovapalooza, where couples kiss their partners simultaneously, or a government-sponsored event such as the grand mass wedding, where hundreds or thousands of couples come together for matrimony.

ARGENTINA

Argentina

While most of us are celebrating Valentine’s Day specifically only during February 14th, This passionate nation managed to add a bit of spice to their tradition. Other than the one-day Valentine celebration, they have this whole week which they called the “Sweetness Week” sometime in July where kisses are exchanged for some sweet treats. Isn’t that sweeter?

SOUTH AFRICA

Capetown

South Africa followed the history of Valentine’s Day. Lupercalia, where it was celebrated as an ominous ritual for many centuries happened to coincide with Valentine’s Day. Thus, this ominous ritual consists of “sacrifice or act of sacrifice” became part of Valentine’s Day. While it’s still debatable and unclear for historians whether it has something to do with Valentine’s Day or if there is a relationship between the two, the Lupercalia festival is known as its earliest festival ancestor. The early festival was intended to enable fertility and is also associated with the matchmaking lottery, thus, why the correlation hypothetically existed.

Valentine’s Day was widely associated with St. Valentine, a Roman saint in the third century that was commemorated on February 14. He is the patron saint of epilepsy and his Saint’s day was traditionally associated with courtly love. Thus, where the celebration name originated. Today, we are celebrating this romantic occasion all over the world. What’s the best way to celebrate it is to give presents like chocolates and flowers to your loved ones.

However, as there were spikes of creativity among different individuals, there are other extraordinary gifts you can give to your partner or spouse without following the norm. These alternatives can add additional affection, or sweetness factors to the relationship.

The Coming of New Breed of Writers: 2nd Gawad Parangal sa Mundo ng Literatura (GPML) Awards 2019

2nd GPML Penmaster League

I am still in awe remembering the much anticipated 2nd Gawad Parangal sa Mundo ng Literatura (GPML) Awards night held at The Village Patio in Brgy Maginhawa, Quezon City last Saturday, February 8, 2020. It was the day where aspiring writers, editors, illustrators, veteran indie authors, and well-acclaimed writers in the writing industry face off to fight for prestigious writing titles in numerous categories. In addition, it was also the day to celebrate the 3rd Penmasters League Book Fair which also happened to be the co-organizer of the event.

Penmasters Administration

Joining them were some of the established publishing companies like Precious Hearts Romances (PHR), Talking Pages, Lathala Press, Lampara Books, Paperkat Books, Booklat, and other indie publishers, together with other active online writing organizations. Fan meet-ups and book signing were also included in the event to make it more memorable and enjoyable for both authors and their fans.

8 Alternative Places To Spend Your Christmas In The Philippines

These places are perfect alternatives for that boring and usual Yuletide celebration at home every year.

Christmas is in the air, and many people are traveling to their provinces to spend the Christmas celebration with their families. In the Philippines, you know it’s Christmas once the BER months entered. Why? Because it’s the moment where you will hear LSS Christmas songs (Good luck with that!). It has become partly a tradition that Christmas songs are played by the local radio stations and on-air. Even in the rural areas, you will hear Christmas songs played in most establishments and stalls. That’s why the Philippines has been known even by some foreigners and long-time tourists that the Philippines is celebrating a long Christmas festivity starting from early September to the celebration of the Three Kings in the first week of January.

There are also some tourists who prefer spending the holidays here in the Philippines. There is always a heart-warming feeling on how Filipinos tend to celebrate this joyous occasion once every year. Immigrants and those who have  Filipino spouses will attest to it. With many places to offer, the Philippines is among the busiest countries with a lot of tourists and immigrants during December. However, it also comes with a disadvantage as tickets are ridiculously expensive in the whole month of December. So, if you are planning to spend the holiday here, better to book ahead of time or check your local travel agencies for flight deals and promotions.

Alternative Places To Spend The Holiday

Known to many, Christmas is also a day to travel and spend the vacation in other countries. Some wealthy Filipinos and frequent travelers are taking this opportunity to travel to their favorite destinations and spend the holiday there. This is in a way their meditative routine to detoxify from the whole year’s workload.

For the average Filipinos, their home is simply the only place they will spend Christmas Eve. With their relatives returning home from the city, it became a reunion and a get-together from distant relatives and long-time friends who haven’t seen each other for a while. Family ties among Filipinos are tight, thus, it’s a culture that makes the Filipino tradition unique and that you wouldn’t find in other nations.

There are actually many places in the Philippines that could be an alternative to the usual Christmas home celebration. Some of the places might not be new to you. But for those who don’t, we round up some places that might be an alternative and will eventually break your usual holiday celebration.

However, be ready to face a crowd of families that will also spend Christmas with you. With that being said, thousands of locals from far-flung provinces dreamt ongoing in this famous park in Manila. And would it be nice if that lifelong dream can achieve this holiday season?

Burnham Park

It gives that holiday chill effect of the winter like the other countries but not as freezing since there is no snow. UPDATED: AUGUST 2021

I was actually thinking of making this comparison back then but I often have forgotten. And I feel like, it’s not the right time yet. Fast forward, now that I think about it, I came to the conclusion that this has to be the right time. Not because I have an issue with Shopee as of this writing. Curious? I will tell you about my experience. But for now, this post needs to be done. (Haha).

In some countries particularly the United States, online shopping has been implemented and it actually worked quite well. With such big names like Amazon of US and Alibaba of China, these are legit testimonies of how a one-man force became the world’s richest billionaire in the persona of Jeff Bezos of Amazon. But of course, there will be online shopping horror stories and failures. I believed it’s actually happening but just a few isolated cases. Regardless of whether you are in the first world or third world countries, these incidents are evident.

Okay, I know for a fact that there are advantages and disadvantages to the use of social media. But this article intends to give light about the posts, and reviews of this online shopping fiasco. Those are legit, guys. It’s not meant to degrade or tarnish anyone’s reputation. Online shopping fails are failures. Period. They’re not hoaxed. It’s not made up stories unless either of the party has had pending criminal records or convicted with a related crime.

Legit Online Shopping Failures

I tried to search a hashtag in Instagram #onlineshoppingfail and yep, the telltales of unhappy, dissatisfied, and morbid online shoppers. Their excitement that turned into a disaster. It’s actually happening and as a consumer, this is an issue we need to addressed and stopped. Exposing scammers, fake items, failed delivery and failed products are important. Yea, I get it! You got the money, so what? This is for ordinary people who worked their ass off just to save that amount. Just as the world has had their fair share of online shopping horrors, the Philippines is no exemption.

Online Shopping In The Philippines

The rise of online shopping in the Philippines flourished in recent years. Two of the giant online shopping companies in the Philippines are battling it out for the online shopping supremacy. To start off, Lazada is one of the actual pioneers of the online shopping industry. Thanks to this company, the online shopping industry had shown potential and Filipinos are just as busy and hardworking as our international neighbors. Reigned for 3 years until the existence of Shopee came head to head against Lazada. For your information, both Lazada and Shopee are primarily a Singapore-based e-commerce platform.

Products: Lazada Vs Shopee

Lazada has its own share of product lines. Being ahead of the online shopping industry in the Philippines compared to Shopee, they have a robust selection of both generic and branded items through LazMall or Lazada Mall. These branded items are also offering discounts where some are Lazada’s exclusive deals.

That being said, having some of the branded names in the industry is a one-point feat against its competitor. However, not everyone came to these online shops to look for branded names. Despite that those are legit brands, it also reflects the prices of their items. Believe it or not, most of the shoppers aren’t even interested in these branded items.

Some are sellers that venture into online business. These sellers bring their products under Lazada or Shopee. So technically, these two companies are just mediums benefitting from these sellers’ products.
Now, what’s the edge of Shopee against Lazada? Despite that Lazada came out first and they have branded items under their belt, Shopee has managed to exceed the number of products that Lazada is selling. That was their greatest feat considering that they are younger than Lazada.

They don’t have specific categories for branded items but Shopee has legit sellers that also offer branded items. It just so happened that the categories of Shopee are more generic, unorganized and they don’t have dedicated stores for branded items, unlike Lazada. They have Celebrity Club, but I wouldn’t consider it as brands but it’s more of a celebrity endorsing or celebrity own product selling. It may be also because Shopee might have a loose business system and they just accept any sellers.

Unlike Lazada who probably has stricter guidelines limiting the same products. And just as I previously mentioned, the online shopper’s generally don’t care about the brand as long as they liked it and the product isn’t so bad.

Winner: Shopee

Price: Lazada Vs Shopee

This is probably the major determining factor for some. But honestly, the prices of both Lazada and Shopee are almost the same or the marginal difference is too small to notice the difference. Unless if it’s a branded item. And the real reason is, it’s upon the sellers’ discretion of the amount they will incur. Lazada and Shopee don’t care about how these sellers are making their price list. However, there is a major factor why despite their prices are the same, yet, in terms of overall pricing one company doesn’t make the cut.

Winner: Both
Overall Pricing Winner: Lazada

Shipping and Delivery: Lazada Vs Shopee

This is the major factor why Lazada stood out as the overall pricing winner. Why? Because of the delivery charge. These two don’t offer the same delivery charge. It’s worth noting that the base price of the products of these two are almost the same, and it’s solely dependent on the seller’s pricing. However, Shopee charges more than Lazada. The minimum delivery charge of Lazada is 50php compared to Shopee’s 100php minimum. So, despite that, the base product prices are the same, as a consumer which will you prefer? Of course, I would choose the low delivery charge any time of the day.

The delivery schedule is almost the same. But somehow, Lazada could make it by 2 days depending on the product you ordered. I’m saying this out of the experience.

Edited: It has been a year since I wrote this article and there has been a great change when it comes to the shipping fees. Lazada removed their based-line shipping fee of P50. It will now depend on the weight of the product the same as what Shopee does.

Winner: Both

Star Wars Authentics

Quality: Lazada Vs Shopee

This is something sort of a case to case basis if there are irregularities. Since most of their generic products are made from China, so you wouldn’t expect more or more disappointment. I am not against China products btw, as I do have products that I am using that are shipped from China. Just a clarification. There are incidents that even in countries like the United States and China have failed in the product quality of their items.

Winner: Both

Service: Lazada Vs Shopee

This is now about the part I mentioned earlier. I experienced bad service thrice in Shopee that I never experienced in Lazada. It’s about missing items. I can definitely justify this based on my personal experiences that sellers in Shopee are twice as bad as in Lazada. And they suck in service as much as the sellers in Lazada. As of this writing, I have an on-going dispute case against one of Shopee’s seller in China. The bad part is, I am their regular customer. The Shopee is handling it professionally but still, bad service is a bad service. I don’t tolerate bad service.

I added something that I just encountered recently with Lazada when I opened an online store. This is not about the product but more of its service feature. This is only meh so don’t take this against Lazada. I’m not the type of getting calls randomly just to promote their seller hub. So, I hate it when Lazada will call me numerous times to announce something new or if they have promotions ahead of time. That is good for some seller, but I don’t personally like it. It’s just similar to going to a mall and this sales clerk keeps on bugging me. I will approach them if I need something.

If you are waiting for an important call, say job interviews, business-related calls ore meetings, you wouldn’t want a random number popping up in your screen and realizing it’s just the Lazada customer service. On the business side, that is marketing. but like I said for me it isn’t. Maybe Lazada should push for email marketing campaigns which they do while Shopee RARELY to never do, instead of calling the person. Or they should ask ahead of time if it’s okay to call for updates so the person should save the number.

Winner: Both

Vouchers And Promotions: Lazada Vs Shopee

When it comes to promotion, the good about these two is that both of them are like actively interacting with one another. Both are implementing the same promotional stints whether it’s a 10/10, Christmas sale, New Year’s sale, end of the month sale, end of the year sale, Halloween Sale, Flash sales, and other sales you can think of. They are also offering Free Shipping for all the products worth 500php (this has changed) up ordered in the same seller and not generally as separate purchases from different sellers. They also have vouchers and discounts. But, again, what makes Lazada stand out is, it has promos and discounts in its branded items.

Winner: Both

LAZADA FLASH SALE

SHOPEE 10/10

Live Selling: Lazada Vs Shopee

This is not a surprise as both platforms have their own way of engaging customers by allowing the sellers to sell via live streaming included inside the platform. They have their own ways of using this live selling feature to tease the customers who are often into online selling. With all the pandemics going on, these have been the avenues of some entrepreneurs that are affected by the pandemic.

Winner: Both

Seller Hub: Lazada Vs Shopee

This is an addition as I just recently venture into online business. Creating an online shop in these platforms become common nowadays. With the pandemic that made everyone lose their jobs, WFH (Work from Home) or venture into online business. It’s inevitable that you wouldn’t encounter this in the Philippines. There are of course other platforms that you can use. There are Facebook Marketplace, Shopify, Etsy or even setting up an online store in your website (if you have one).

When it comes to setting an online store, there are two differiating factors between the two. Lazada created their stand-alone app dedicated for the Lazada Seller Hub, while Shopee’s Seller Hub is inside the Shopee app. If I want something simple an my smartphone isn’t cut with a high internal storage, Shopee has the advantage. The Lazada Seller app is battery and memory space consuming. When it comes to setting the app, Lazada requires your real DTI certificate and Business information whereas, you can easily set-up an online shop in Shopee.

For credibility’s sake, that is a good feature from Lazada. It allows legit sellers with the intent to sell and not some kind of a bogus seller or scam. This issue is rather a case to case basis, so it will not necessarily reflect the integrity of the shops. However, if you are to create your virtual shop now, you can’t with Lazada. You need your business to be registered with the DTI’s business number. That’s the advantage of Shopee; it will allow you to create your shop with ease. The downside is, you wouldn’t know whether the shops inside Shopee are legit.

Winner: Shopee

Conclusion

Lazada: ⭐⭐⭐
Shopee: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I don’t discourage you to use Lazada or Shopee. At the end of the day, it’s up to you whose service you are satisfied with, whose products cater to your preference, whose delivery is you comfortable and the list goes on. I for one, use these two online shopping companies. I go for Lazada for the same product I am using. And I also order in Shopee for the products I am using that aren’t found in Lazada. I use both of their seller platforms but I mostly update my shop in Shopee.

* 1 – 5 stars – 5 as the highest and 1 as the lowest

Manila International Book Fair 2019: It’s Fun After All

With much anticipation before the recently concluded Manila International Book Fair (MIBF) 2019, I had a great time when I went there last September 12, 2019. It actually ran from September 11 to 15, 2019. Every year, it is celebrated as a 5-day event. It’s a gathering of big and small-time publishers, big and amateur writers, published authors, and traditional and indie publications. And of course, the hoarding of the books of both local and international acclaimed authors by bookworms.

What’s so special about the recent MIBF 2019? Well, unfortunately, there is nothing new to the book fair based on previous articles and videos about it. The book sale, the publishers, the events such as book signings of various local authors, programs, and the same activities held every year are the same as last year, except that there are changes in exhibitors. And of course, it is my first time attending such an event.

See also: MARK PHILLIP CASTILLO: PAIRIDAEZA AND THE BIRTH OF A NEW AUTHOR

If you are a student, you will definitely benefit from the various textbooks on sale. I have seen a few exhibitors who are selling school textbooks and college references. There are also other exhibitors who just don’t sell Science and Technology books, robotics, and Encyclopedias, but there are actual crafts and simple robots that were displayed to add an additional mood in the air. If you are into these kinds of things, you will appreciate those stalls and learn something from them.

Most of the books on sale are faith-based books. The likes of Philippine Christian Book Store (PCBS), CSM Publishing, OMF Bookshop, Philippine Bible Society (PBS), and other new Christian book stores that I am not familiar with. The presence of big names such as National Bookstore, Anvil Publishing, REX Bookstore, ABS-CBN Publishing, Fully Booked, Psicom, Our Daily Bread, and other familiar names in the industry.

See also: MIBF: BOOKS ARE MARCHING AND HEADING TO SMX CONVENTION

As an indie author, I saw indie and small publishing houses like Booklat, Bookware, Lampara, 8Letters, Phoenix Publishing, and a lot more. There are also author booths that conducted book signing events such as the one I came across (it’s a separate article). However, I didn’t expect the presence of university publications like UP,  UST, and FEU publication. The organizers also held programs with famous book personalities and media icons present and conducted a little workshop for writer aspirants. The schedule was posted on the wall so you will know what day are they coming. Unfortunately, I haven’t encountered any famous personality nor author that day. So sorry for me. 😅 If you are hungry, you don’t need to go out of the premises as there are food stalls on either corner and a roving food girl carries a trolley with local goodies, snacks, and beverages.

MY PERSONAL MIBF EXPERIENCE

It was dark and cloudy when I arrived. The rain is expected to fall at that time but luckily, it didn’t until I entered the SMX Convention. Although there are free entrance pass tickets available on the internet (you have to print them and show them at the entrance), I didn’t have time to do so. I just bought one at the actual event. It cost me 35 PHP, for the adult entrance while there is a variant of 20 PHP for the children.

You will be definitely fascinated by the plethora of books in front of you.  The two floors of the SMX Convention were dedicated to the said event. There are children’s books for your kiddos and a few BTS merchandise for K-Pop fans present at the book fair. However, that fascination dwindled as I was disappointed with the outcome of the book fair. Since it was my first time, I was expecting that the household author books (I am mostly referring to self-help, business, and financial freedom book authors aside from fictional authors) will be on sale at a discounted or reasonable prices but to my dismay, it didn’t. That was my sole purpose on why I came there in the first place. Most of them are selling at regular prices or 20% discounts.

But to give light to this failed expectation, there are textbooks that can be bought at 10 PHP – 50 PHP depending on the textbook. Psicom books are also available from 69 PHP to 99 PHP and most of the faith-based books are sold at 100 PHP of 1 regular book of any topic or two small size books like devotionals. And ABS-CBN publications and other indie pubs are selling their books around the price of 150ish.

See also: MANILA INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIR 2018

In general, it was a successful event despite that I only bought a few pieces. Not all of the books I intended to buy were there. It only means that despite that it is indeed a big book fair, you shouldn’t expect it to be grander and complete. Some people I knew in the industry met at the said event, aside from the fact that they met their favorite local authors. I will see if I will be as enthusiastic to attend next year’s MIBF as I was this year.

What are your thoughts about the recent event? Share us in the comments below.

3 Types of Wooden Doors You Must Know This 2021

3-types-of-wooden-doors-you-must-know

Choosing the right type of wood for your front door is stressful. This guide aims to help you a budget-friendly wooden door without compromising the durability of the wood .

Houses are one of the important assets people need to invests into. Owning a house is somewhat expensive but it’s a good investment overtime especially real estate business have been always growing and never undergo devaluation in the market. Real Estate is most of time, if not always a win-win situation. In the Philippines, housing can be obtained through a government housing insurance like PAG-IBIG payable depending on the number of years of agreement. There are other ways like bank financing, loan or mortgage, rent-to-own, and of course buying it with cold cash.

We are familiar with the proverb, “The eyes are the windows of our soul.” Just like the saying, a great door made of great material emanates a great house inside. Many home owners, especially within the socialite class are meticulous in choosing the right wood for their door. But since the financial capacity of most Filipinos are in the middle or upper middle classes, they tend to choose the inexpensive but durable wood for front doors.

In the United States of America, woods are classified into ten types that are commonly used in doors among the American households, that is according to Bill Esler of Woodworking Network. These are:

  • Pine
  • Bamboo (debatable since it is classified as a grass)
  • African Cherry
  • Douglas Fir
  • White Oak
  • Red Oak
  • Teak
  • Pacific Cherry
  • Knotty Woods
  • Mahogany

However, due to the climate differences and other contributing factors, here in the Philippines, the most common types of woods for the doors you would see are: Melina, Mahogany and Narra. I was able to know these things because I went to many furniture shops in my province. I was asked by my sister for her house, so I thought it would be better to enlighten my readers and share this nugget of information.

For that, when it comes to durability, I will recommend you all these three types of woods. They are all durable, hard and a great wood for furnitures especially for the door. When it comes to the wear and tear, Melina wood is the mediocre. However, according to my source during my canvasing, mahogany are prone to wood-boring beetles. So, it will shorten the usability and durability of mahogany woods. Wood-boring beetles are similar to termites, but not as destructive as the latter. When it comes to the price, this is where the deal-breaker takes place. Narra woods are very expensive, twice or even combined prices of both Melina and Mahogany. While mahogany is just a hundred to thousand bucks more than Melina wood.

So, Narra Wood is the sure winner among the three. Except that it comes with a hefty price tag. So if you are in a tight budget, I would recommend you the durable and cheaper Melina and Mahogany, but if you are willing to splurge more thousand bucks, I will definitely recommend you the Narra wood for your door.
